Jaunākais aviokompānijas Boeing ražotais lidaparāts Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental, kas ir pasaulē garākā pasažieru lidmašīna, ir veicis pirmo pārbaudes lidojumu, sekmīgi nolaižoties Sietlā. Lidojums ilga četras stundas un tas tika uzsākts Everett’s Paine Field lidostā, ASV Vašingtonas štatā. Lidojuma laikā Boeing 747-8 pavadīja divas lidmašīnas.
Jaunā Boeing lidmašīna patērē mazāk degvielas, tai ir jauns spārnu veids, aste un dzinējs, kā arī tā ir daudz komfortablāka un 19 pēdas (aptuveni 5,7m.) garāka nekā iepriekšējā.
Boeing 747-8 būs divi modeļi: pasažieru lidmašīna 747-8 Intercontinental (747-8I) un kravas pārvadājumiem paredzētā 747-8 Freighter (747-8F).
Boieng 747-8 ir arī otra lielākā pasažieru lidmašīna pasaulē, savos izmēros tā tikai nedaudz atpaliek no Airbus A380. Savukārt pasaules vislielākā lidmašīna ir PSRS ražotā An 225, kas tika paredzēta Buran kosmisko kuģu transportēšanai.
Ceturtās paaudzes Boeing 747–8 spēj pārvadāt 467 pasažierus - par 51 vairāk nekā plaši izmantotais 747 modelis. Kā apgalvo kompānija, jaunā lidmašīna patērē mazāk degvielas, tai ir jauns spārnu veids, aste un dzinējs, kā arī, tā ir daudz komfortablāka un 19 pēdas (aptuveni 5,7m.) garāka kā iepriekšējā, kas padara to par garāko pasažieru lidaparātu pasaulē.
Vadošās aviosabiedrības gan pagaidām jauno modeli uzņem salīdzinoši vēsi – līdz šim Boeing ir saņēmis tikai 33 pasūtījumus no divām kompānijām – Lufthansa un Korean Air.
